If you’re looking for a free activity to do in Montreal, you can’t miss a visit to Mount Royal. Located in the heart of the city, Mount Royal offers stunning views of Montreal’s skyline, as well as a range of outdoor activities and cultural experiences.
One of the most popular activities is hiking. With over 200 hectares of lush forest and trails, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the mountain’s natural beauty. The most popular trail is the Olmsted Path, which winds its way up the mountain to the Chalet du Mont-Royal. Along the way, you’ll pass through peaceful woods, meadows, and viewpoints that offer breathtaking vistas of the city.
Another popular activity on the mountain is picnicking. It has several designated picnic areas, including Beaver Lake and Smith House, where you can relax and enjoy a meal with family and friends while taking in the stunning views.
If you’re interested in Montreal’s history and culture, the Mount Royal Cemetery is a must-visit. This cemetery is the final resting place of many notable figures, including former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and hockey legend Maurice “Rocket” Richard. You can take a self-guided tour of the cemetery, which includes a map and information on some of the notable gravesites.
Mount Royal is also home to several public art installations, including the Mount Royal Cross, which stands at the summit of the mountain and is visible from many parts of the city. There are also several sculptures and monuments throughout the park that are worth checking out.
Another interesting activity is the Eco-Friendly Activities on Mount Royal, from May to October, come join us and take an active role in protecting the mountain’s natural environment on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon, as well as one Tuesday a month from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – Free of charge.
