The Ottawa Storytellers are offering a series of free children’s workshops focused on the art of storytelling. Here’s a summary of the activities, along with some fun facts:

Workshop Details:

  1. Location: Fairfields Heritage House, 3080 Richmond Rd, Ottawa (near Bayshore Shopping Centre).
  2. Dates: Saturdays, January 13 – March 02, 2024.
  3. Time:
    • For ages 13-15: Noon – 1:15 pm.
    • For ages 8-12: 10:30 am – 11:45 am.
  4. Maximum Participants: 12 per age group.
  5. Cost: Free.

Workshop Goals:

  • For Youth (13-15 years):
    • Improving active listening skills.
    • Expanding creative imagination.
    • Developing storytelling tools.
    • Enhancing self-confidence and public speaking skills.
    • Participation in a storytelling concert.
  • For Children (8-12 years):
    • Exploring stories from diverse cultures.
    • Learning different techniques to learn and tell stories.
    • Enhancing observation skills.
    • Providing supportive feedback.
    • Developing a unique storytelling style.
    • Building skills and confidence through the Oral Art of Storytelling.
    • Participation in a storytelling concert.

Instructors:

  • Jacqui du Toit: An internationally acclaimed storyteller, actor, puppeteer, dancer, and playwright. She has a degree in Theatre and Performance from the University of Cape Town and is bilingual in English and Afrikaans. Jacqui is the Creative Director at 8th Generation Storytelling Performance and co-owner of The Origin Arts Community Centre.
  • Brad Denys: A performer with a background in Cirque du Soleil, acting, dancing, clowning, and storytelling. He has performed in over 37 countries and brings a unique style to storytelling.

Fun Facts:

  1. Jacqui du Toit has performed across Canada and has been involved in various theatre productions, including “The Hottentot Venus-Untold” and “Hamlet.”
  2. Brad Denys literally ran away to join the circus and has a rich history of performing with Cirque du Soleil and other renowned groups.
  3. The workshops culminate in a storytelling concert, giving participants a platform to showcase their newly learned skills.
  4. These workshops not only focus on storytelling but also aim to enhance important life skills like active listening, imagination, and public speaking.

This series of workshops offers a unique opportunity for young people in Ottawa to learn the art of storytelling from experienced and diverse professionals in a fun and interactive way.
