The Ogden Point Breakwater offers a delightful and free outdoor activity in Victoria, perfect for those looking to enjoy scenic views and observe local wildlife. This popular walk starts from Dallas Road and extends out into the Juan de Fuca Strait, leading to a lighthouse at the far end. Along the way, visitors can watch a variety of harbour traffic, including cruise ships and ferries, and might spot wildlife such as seagulls and seals.

The breakwater path, which gained railings only in 2013 for added safety, provides panoramic views of the harbour and surrounding areas. At the end of the breakwater, visitors can enjoy views of the Juan de Fuca Strait, Macaulay Point Park, and the James Bay area. Adventurous visitors can take the stairs down to the lower level of the breakwater, but caution is advised due to slippery conditions and unpredictable waves.

For those interested in extending their walk, Dallas Road offers a scenic route connecting to other parks and popular walking areas like Beacon Hill Park and Clover Point Park.

Getting There

By Car: The breakwater is located in the James Bay area, southwest of downtown Victoria. Visitors can drive along Belleville Street, which winds through the neighbourhood and leads to Dallas Road, where parking is available near the cruise ship terminal.

By Public Transportation: The breakwater is accessible by a 15-minute bus ride from downtown Victoria on Bus #31: James Bay, or by a 25-minute walk from the Legislature building.

Additional Information

  • Dog-Friendly: Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.
  • Toilets: There are no public washrooms on the breakwater itself, but nearby businesses offer facilities for customers.

Fun Facts

  • Historical Safety: The Ogden Point Breakwater didn’t have railings until 2013, making the walk a bit more thrilling for visitors prior to that year.
  • Wildlife Watching: It’s a great spot for wildlife enthusiasts, as seals are often seen lounging around and seagulls are spotted gliding in the harbour winds.
  • Marine Gateway: The breakwater provides a unique vantage point to observe the bustling marine traffic of Victoria’s harbour, including the comings and goings of various aircraft and sea vessels.
